So this is kind of a FOTD and swatch/comparison all in one. I have the Dr. Pickles Miraculous Beauty Dusts from My Pretty Zombie for you. I always use the mint shade, mostly because my face likes be red all the time and it helps neutralize the redness a lot. The violet is used for neutralizing yellow in the skin. Anyways, off to the photos.

Violet – Mica, Rice Powder, Silicone Dioxide, Ultramarines, Magnesium Myristrate. VEGAN

Swatches taken in direct sun and swatched over bare skin.

I don’t know if you can really see much of a difference in the photos. I started a new skin routine using asian skincare products and it’s drastically reduced the redness in my face. But the green powder now totally neutralizes any red in my face, before I started using the asian skin care products it did a pretty god job, but you could still tell I was a little red. I don’t really use the violet because it just sort of enhances the redness a little, which I don’t want. xd I love the green powder though. It leaves no green cast on your face and it helps keep my face from getting oily super fast. The powder itself is very fine and silky. My cheeks tend to always stay dry and this doesn’t enhance that, or make them more dry or flaky. I definitely recommend trying it. At least get a sample to try. I am very happy with it!

Hey look. I finally swatched my de Leon Cosmetics lippies. >.> So Gladys sent me some of these as gifts and some I’ve purchased. :) Some of you may know that her eye primer is my holy grail eye primer. But that’s another post. >.> Onto the review! I’m waiting for some official descriptions and ingredient list for the f/s balm tubes. >.> I accidentally threw the wrappers away which had that info. Oops. But I wanted to get this up so I’ll be adding those later.

#3 Why Can’t I Stay?: I have a sample size balm and gloss. I’m bad at describing colors, so bear with me. xd The official description of this shade is pretty spot on. Definitely a rosy classic red. It’s very pretty. The balm is a nice creamy formula, it doesn’t dry my lips out. It’s fairly pigmented, but I find the gloss to be much more pigmented. The gloss feels thick and velvety, not sticky at all. Both formulas are spot on shade-wise. I recommend getting the gloss version of this formula as you can blot it down if you prefer a less shiny application. There is no scent.

Balm Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera, Cera Alba +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene.?? Gloss Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer (and) Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene. ??NOT VEGAN

#4 Let the Wookie Win: I have a sample size balm and gloss. My gloss and balm aren’t the same shade for some reason. I just noticed while swatching them. The balm is sort of… a dark brownish-wine shade. Seriously bad at describing colors here. >.> It’s decently pigmented, it can definitely be built up. The gloss is this bright vampy wine red. It’s really pretty. The gloss is very pigmented, you definitely don’t need to use much. Both formulas, much like #3 are great formulas. The balm is creamy and the gloss is plush and yummy on the lips. Again I recommend the gloss just because you can blot it down. I’m generally not a gloss fan, but I do like these. There is no scent.

Balm Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera, Cera Alba +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenatde polyisobutene.??? Gloss Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer (and) Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene.?? NOT VEGAN

#5 Registered Companion: I have a gloss sample. It’s a warm rusty-rose red. It’s actually a really pretty color and was more flattering on my face than I thought it was going to be. The gloss formula was not quite as thick as some of the other glosses, but wasn’t sticky and was very pigmented. There is no scent.

Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer (and) Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene.?? NOT VEGAN

line
#11 I Could Never Be Your Girl: I have a gloss sample. This is a plum rose shade. This was another shade I didn’t think I was going to like. I don’t really go for darker colors, but this was really pretty. I’m glad Gladys sent it, it’s not something I would pick out on my own. This is another gloss that was thinner in consistency. The gloss is creamy and not sticky. It’s very pigmented and has no scent.

Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer (and) Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene.?? NOT VEGAN

line
#13 I Aim to Misbehave: I have both a balm and gloss sample. AUGH! Both of these I received in a little birthday package Gladys sent to me. I fell in love. It’s this… cool bright magenta shade with a pretty blue shift. Both the gloss and balm are very pigmented. The both are creamy formulas. The gloss is plush and a bit sticky. The only difference between the gloss and balm is that the gloss is a bit shinier. Out of the two I actually prefer the balm to the gloss. There is no scent.

Balm Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera, Cera Alba +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene.?? Gloss Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer (and) Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, +/- mica, iron oxide, carmine, tin oxide, red #40, fd&c blue #1, silica, calcium aluminium borosilicate, fd&c yellow #5 lake, palmatic acid, hydrogenated polyisobutene.?? NOT VEGAN

#26 Let’s Be Bad Guys: I have a full size tube. Before purchasing this shade #13 was my favorite out of the bunch. However this quickly became my favorite. It’s a satiny bright magenta. It’s not quite as shiny as the other balms, it leans more matte and the color is gorgeous. After seeing it on the facebook page I purchased it without trying a sample and I wasn’t let down. The balm formula is thick and creamy and very pigmented. I’m tempted to pick up a backup. >.> There is no scent.

Ingredients: Coming Soon! NOT VEGAN

line
#76 Have I Ever Let You Down?: I have a full size tube. This is my second favorite. It’s gorgeous! It’s a cool berry/purple/wine-ish shade. Like #26 it’s more matte than the other balms. It’s very pigmented and creamy. Does not dry my lips out. There is no scent.

Woot! Interview with Gladys from de Leon Cosmetics. :)

Luna: How long have you been making cosmetics, why did you start?
Gladys: Back in early 2009 I developed one of those strange makeup cravings that I sometimes get. It has no rhyme or reason, and there certainly isn’t any logic to it, but all of a sudden, I wanted red glittery eyeshadow. After perusing my vast makeup collection (read, dumping it all on the coffee table and squeeing when I rediscovered lost treasures!) I noted that while I owned a matte red, there was indeed no glittery red to be found. Actually, there was no glittery anything but that’s another story…

So I set out to acquire this little missing part of my life. Truth be told, it was probably destined to be purchased, applied a few times and then relegated to the dozen lunchboxes that currently contain my collection. That is the way of things in my household.

But the universe had other plans for me. I discovered that no retail outlet within lazy driving distance offered a glittery red. No problem, I prefer to buy online anyway. I love getting packages in the mail! So I widened my search and discovered a makeup genre that so far had escaped my attention. Indie makeup, short for independent. People were actually making their own cosmetics!!! Instead of corporate juggernaughts, there were average everyday people mixing their own pretty powders! This caught my eye. How does this happen? And so started one of the largest research projects that I have ever undertaken. Formulation.

I spent the next two years reading, researching, developing relationships with other formulators, and above all, practicing my formulations. Some things were an instant success; some things have had me tearing my hair out for months, staring at ingredient lists, wondering where I went wrong. There is a lost graveyard box in my lab labeled rejects, and the contents are not pretty!

And I was happy muddling along with my pretties. I would use them on myself, grinning at the sheer luxury of creating an eye shadow to match a shirt I was planning to wear that weekend! But people started to notice and after months of being urged to go into business for myself and “share the pretties” as I was told to do, it started to leak into my brain. Could I do this? What business experience do I have? I have no chemistry background, in fact my 8th grade science teacher can affirm that I have NO science aptitude! But I do have a knack for colours and the formulation comes naturally…

My partner urged me to follow up on this and as a team, we started on the long and often painful process that involved way too much paperwork to fathom, and frustrations at every corner. We had a plan. I would continue to work full time outside the home, while seriously studying the formulation side of it, spare money being invested in the business and in time we would open. And then the universe stepped in. I was made redundant 3 days before Xmas and after an initial absolute freak out, I desperately searched for the silver lining. Maybe it was time to put aside any insecurities and just go for it! What else did I have to do? I was incredibly unhappy in my previous workplace and yearned to be my own boss, surrounded by an activity that made my heart sing, but that full time wage is really hard to give up, you know?

And so here we are. Older, wiser, and still hating the paperwork. But we present de Leon Cosmetics as a labour of love, a project that absolutely had to happen.

And in case you’re wondering, that red glittery eye shadow? It’s available for all to share! It’s called Dorothy’s Slippers and I’ve used it more than a few times now!

and do you have any future plans for new shades/products?

Oh I have so many plans, it’s like being a kid in a candy store. What do I do next? Ooh look, shiny!
To give you an idea of what’s in various stages of development I have blushes (cream and powder), cream eyeshadows, lip liners, eye liners, eye shadow pencils in the chubby stick format, and foundations (powder and liquid).
New shades? I still have some unreleased eyeshadows waiting in the wings and today I’m working on lip colours for our more Goth clientelle.

Luna: What is your favorite eyeshadow/lippie/primer that you make?
Gladys: Eyeshadow: Squeaker’s Ride, hands down my favourite of the bunch. Lippie: Looks better in red, I have a weakness for red lippies. Primer: My eye primer rocks my world!

Luna: What is your favorite eyeshadow/lippie/primer from another indie company?
Gladys: I just have to do a shout out to a fellow Aussie Indie maker here and say that Faerie Fire by Femme Fatale has got to be one of the prettiest shades I have seen in a long time. And Sophie is just too adorable for words!

Luna: Would you rather be a Crow or a Bat?
Gladys: Bat. I call them my gothic butterflies. My partner calls them rats with wings. I love him despite this.

Luna: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Gladys: I would love to add a huge thank you for the support that you and a few other ladies (you know who you are!) have shown me since I launched the company. Being way over here on the other side of the world, it was daunting breaking into a market that is very US based. It has been a very eye opening ride, I can tell you! But along the way I have found a network of fellow indie makers and customers that I am proud to call friends. I am in this for the long haul and each day I approach my work table in total awe that this is what I get to do!

My current favorite eye primer is from de Leon. :) It’s awesome sauce. Her lip products, both the gloss and lipstick balms are amazing as well. I have samples that I still need to swatch and get up, but they’re great.
