5 Marvellous Mattes CollageHi everyone! We’re the team from Indie Know, and today we’d like to show you our favorite indie matte products. A huge thank you to Luna for giving us this opportunity to share! This is an adaptation of the Colors of the Rainbow blogger tag that we’ve been featuring over at Indie Know.

Detrivore LilithAG’s pick – Detrivore Cosmetics’ Lilith

When I think of my favorite indie mattes, I immediately think of Detrivore’s matte blushes. To me, the standout shade in this beautiful lineup is softly purple Lilith. I cannot recommend this shade enough for pale folks who want something that’s a little unusual but still safe to wear to the office. It comes in Detrivore’s excellent matte formula, which means it’s blendable, creamy, and has just the right amount of pigmentation. It’s one of many Detrivore blushes I’ve ordered in full size, but it’s definitely my favorite!

naked-3-dupe-analog-limitLisa’s pick – Silk Naturals’ Analog

Mattes are the unsung heroes in my eyeshadow collection. I’d like to say I mostly use shadows with shimmery or pearly finishes because I love them (and I do!) but really it comes down to skill. Shimmery shadows simply are more forgiving when you lack a skilled blending hand. But behind the scenes I fall back on a few trusty mattes for highlights and creases, and one of my heavyweight champions is Silk Naturals’s “Analog,” a dupe for the Urban Decay “Limit” shadow from their Naked 3 palette.

Analog is described as a “dusty rose matte” but with a light hand it turns into an excellent transitional crease color. I have pinkish undertones to my skin, so I do have to be careful and not apply too much or else I look like I’ve lost a few nights of sleep! Between the finely milled formula, the classic rose color, and its buttery-smooth blendability, Analog is a staple that could easily fit in anyone’s collection.

MBA OCDJeannie’s pick – My Beauty Addiction’s O.C.D.

When it comes to bold, bright lipsticks, I feel much more comfortable rocking a pink lip than a red lip (even if it looks super ’80s!) My Beauty Addiction’s O.C.D. HD Lip Paint is described as a “a super bright & vivid pink with a matte finish.” On my skin, it appears lighter and a little more Barbie-pink than in the swatch on the website, where it looks more hot-pink. Texture-wise, it’s not as drying as many matte lipsticks I’ve tried, but I recommend making sure lips are exfoliated and moisturised before applying because this can highlight lip imperfections. Try out a few samples if you’re on the hunt for opaque, pigmented matte lippies!

13451658494_a49ab45f54_kKristin’s pick – Madd Style Cosmetics’ In the Buff

One of my favorite all time mattes is from Madd Style Cosmetics. In The Buff is a perfect nude shade for me and I use it to blend out harsh edges. I’m so sad that MSC is going out of business! But before they close, they’re having a huge blow out sale. They’re selling 8 eyeshadows for $28! I’d definitely recommend checking out their line before they’re all gone. I’ll be picking up a few extras of this shade for sure.

Detrivore TombValentine’s pick – Detrivore’s Tomb

Back in the olden days, long before the customer service issues that ultimately landed Detrivore in a distribution partnership with Shiro Cosmetics, I ordered the whole Graveyard Collection, which was a set of 20 matte neutral eyeshadows. My favorite of the whole batch was Tomb, which is still available via Shiro. Tomb is boring (it’s from a collection of neutrals, after all) but something about the color just hits a sweet spot for me–it’s a mid-toned cool taupe brown that leans slightly towards lavender-rose in the same way as mainstream eyeshadows Burberry Rosewood or NARS Lhasa do on the other end of the price spectrum. I’ve swatched it here heavily over Urban Decay Primer Potion.

What are some of your favorite indie matte products?

So today was grocery shopping day for the week. I put mah face on. I got my MPZ on today. I wore Henrywinkle with Law Firm Lamb Cake! Law Firm Lamb Cake is similar to Unicorn Pee. It’s a white with a gorgeous pinky shift and rainbow glitz. Henrywinkle is one of the first shadows I got from Andrea at My Pretty Zombie and I still have much fondness for it. Henrywinkle is this gorgeous blue with a violet sheen. It was a beautiful combo! I used MDMA of course cause it’s my holy grail blush, but it was SO hot I ended up getting sick and by the time I got home my nose and cheeks were so red I didn’t need any blush. xd Also a couple of pictures of Sascha and Fumiko. <3

Woot! Mo from Madd Style Cosmetics let me ask her a few questions. :)

Luna: How long have you been making indie cosmetics, and what made you start?
Mo: I started Madd Style Cosmetics in February of 2010, however I had been making cosmetics for the better part of a year prior to opening. I’ve always considered myself an artist. Creating is a passion of mine. I’ve worked with many mediums however, after being a part of the online beauty community for so long, and modeling for indie companies, the science behind making cosmetics become more and more intriguing. Before MSC, I owned “Madd Style Designs”. I sold hand-made cosmetic bags and vegan lip balms. Extending my cosmetics line, at that time, just seemed like the most logical – and natural- thing to do.

Luna: Do you have any future plans for different products? Any future collections in the works?
Mo: Currently I am working on 2 Collections (possibly 3! shhh!) for Halloween. After that the Holidays will be in full swing, so there will be plenty of new product coming out within the next few months. Recently I started releasing blushes from MSC’s new “Cheek Chic” line, I plan on coming out with one or two more cheek colors by the end of the year, as well as a “re-release” of my Optimus Primer with new packaging.

Luna: What is your favorite item that you make?
Mo: Of course I am bias, but I love the eye shadows. lol. The major thing that sets Madd Style apart from other indie (and mainstream) companies is the complexity and uniqueness of the shadows. While MSC does offer a wide range of simple, more practical colors, I am a huge fan of the ones that “do tricks”. The ones that change color, are pressure sensitive, have color-shifting sparkle, and duo-chromatic finishes are my most favorite to create… and wear!

Luna: What is your favorite beauty item from another indie company?
Mo: I LOVE MTCoffinz’s pressed eye shadows and color balms. I only have one color balm but I can already foresee an addiction happening. lol

Luna: Would you rather be a Crow or a Bat?
Mo: Bat! For no good reason other than they look more badass, are unique in their existence, and sonar is cool. lol

Luna: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Mo: Just a big thank you to you, Luna, and your readers, for taking the time to show MSC some love. Over the past 2.5 (almost 3) years Madd Style has grown to be very successful and I count my blessings everyday. I’m so proud, and honored, to be where I am today and will never forget that it’s because of all of “you”. <3

MSC is an awesome company run by an awesome lady. Her shadows are beautiful. She’s got some really interesting and unique duochromes. Like Seedless for example. It’s a pretty pink with a green shift. So is Final Fantasy. It’s a gray/green base with a pretty gold duochrome. MSC is definitely a company you should peruse and buy. Samples come in little clam shells and aren’t always up. So if you want samples check her shop periodically. It’s really worth it. :)

More pretties from Madd Style Cosmetix! I have Moth, Puck, Sexxy Rexy and All That Glitters for you. All That Glitters is amazing, I can’t even describe it, it’s like a silver, gold, taupe thing? Just buy it. Puck is kind of shimmery sage green with multi-colored sparks. Sexxy Rexy is the perfect strawberry red with silver sparks? It’s really pretty. Moth is a lovely white with a pink/violet shift, it’s really lovely. This kind of looks like a Christmas themed swatch post. I didn’t plan it out that way. xd

These were taking indoors under a daylight bulb and swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Darling Girl Cosmetics Glitter Glue.

MOTH is a pink-toned white with a violet shift and a hint of sparkle.
PUCK is the green from the Midsummer’s Night Dream collection. It has a satin finish with multi-colored glitter throughout.
SEXXXY REXY is a sexxxy strawberry pink with lots of shimmer.
ALL THAT GLITTERS is a layered blend of sliver and gold with lots of glitz! Definitely one of a kind!

So I have some pretties from Madd Style Cosmetix for you. I have Ohm, Pixie, Unicorns & Glitter and Seedless. Ohm is a pretty pale dusty purple with a bit of a gold shift/sheen to it. Pixie is a red based purple with lots of gold sparks. Unicorns & Glitter is a peachy pink with a gold shift. And finally Seedless is a light pink with a pretty green shift. I love all four of these shadws, but I like Seedless the best of course. ;) I also really like Ohm which isn’t a surprise because Pisces is freaking gorgeous. MSC colors are really worth picking up. I haven’t been disappointed at all in them and have been pleasantly surprised on more than one occasion.

Ohm is a shimmery purple with a gold interference. This is the purple version of MSCs Pisces.

Pixie is a cute pixie purple fill with gold fairy dust.

Unicorns & Glitter is a light pink with a warm gold duo-chrome

Seedless is a bubble gum pink with green glitter and a green duo chrome.

These were swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Darling Girl Cosmetics Glitter Glue. Photos were taken indoors under a daylight bulb.

Oh Hai. I has more Madd Style Cosmetics pretties for you. ^.~ Here we have Desert Punk, Starry Night, Phantasm, Blammo!, and Kitty Wumpous. I love them all. >.> I want to do a look with Phantasm and Kitty Wumpous, they just seem like they’d be so pretty together in a smokey eye kinda thing. Blammo! and Kitty Wumpous have gorgeous glitter/sparkle. I used Blammo! with Nirvana the other day which looked super awesome. These shades are all awesome formulas and they’re all super shimmery.

Just a quick note, the blog sale page was moved to the blog menu up top. :)

Hokay so I’ve been putting this off for awhile. I was mainly avoiding blogging about Madd Style Cosmetix because of all the negative junk that seems to follow them. I want to say, I’m fully aware of all of the “issues” that involve this company. I personally feel that a lot of the “issues” are just people looking for a reason not to like MSC or Mo, and other issues are from the past. I haven’t heard anything recent about MSC that is negative. So with that being said I have swatches!

MSC has some gorgeous colors. I wish I’d tried them sooner. They’re super sparkly and well pigmented. It’s just a really nice formula. For whatever reason I picked out a lot of greens/blue-greens from MSC. I had to purchase Lotus Bloom for obvious reasons, but I also have Pisces and Seaglasm in f/s jars and Nirvana and Tank girl in clam shells. Pisces is freaking gorgeous and I need to wear it as a highlight. The arm swatch for Pisces was um my bad. I effed up with the primer. But you can see in the other swatches how pretty is is. I actually love Seaglasm and Nirvana the most our of these. I’m throwing up a photo of my eyeball where I have Blammo! and Nirvana on. It’s so pretty.

If you like this post do me a favor and like it up there on the top right!
