Review: up & up™ Maximum Strength Acetone Nail Polish Remover Dip-It

||||| Like It 1 Like it! |||||

purchased by me

So I discovered the up & up Maximum Strength Acetone Nail Polish Remover Dip-It some time last year. I saw it mentioned online and decided to give it a try. So glad I did!

Official description
Easily remove your old nail polish with this remover dip from Up & Up. The convenient dip bottle makes it easy to sponge off your nail polish. In seconds you’ll have a blank canvas for your new color.

Where to buy
From Target stores – $2.49-$2.54 for a 9 oz jar.

Directions
To remove artificial nails: Insert finger and soak nail tips, wraps or artificial nails to dissolve and remove them. Scrub fingernail up and down against the bristles. You may need to file any additional residue and clean nail completely before applying any new nail products. Built in brush removes artificial nails quickly. Not for polish removal on artificial nails.

To remove gel polish: Using a medium-coarse file, file away the shiny layer of the gel polish; to scuff surface allowing better removal by the acetone. Soak entire nail(not entire hand) into the remover for 10-15 minutes. Using a wood cuticle pusher, gently scrape away gel from the nails(top and underneath) and skin surrounding the nail. This should be easily removed. If there is resistance, soak nails for another 5-10 minutes. Repeat soak and scrape until all gel polish is removed. Wash hands with soap and water to remove any acetone from the skin and nails. Lightly buff nails to remove all gel nail polish residue from the nails and until nails are smooth. Apply nail oil and/or hand lotion to restore moisture to the nails and hands.

Packaging
Comes in a white tub/jar with a blue lid. Label is white with black text and blue accents. The jar has a blue twist on lid. When you first open it you’ll find a white paper seal with black writing. When you remove that you’re left with a plastic seal. Make sure it’s not pointing at you when you puncture it. Just peal it away. Inside all round the edge are vertical, long, pink plastic bristles.

Scent and formula
It’s your standard clear, watery, stinky acetone.

Ingredients
Acetone, denatonium benzoate.

The label claims it removes gel nail polish, glitter and artificial nails. Well I don’t use gel polish or artificial nails, so I don’t know how this works on those, but I do wear glitter and regular polish! So this is pretty awesome. It’s not like your normal nail polish tubs, it has plastic bristles instead of foam. All you have to do is stick your finger in and rub your nail up and down on the bristles. You want to make sure it’s up and down and not side to side, as the bristles aren’t strong when moving side to side. It only take a couple of seconds to get off normal polish. When removing glitter polish I find I can moving my finger up and down for 12-15 seconds and the glitter is completely gone or there are just a couple of pieces left which flake right off. Now if you use elmer’s glue or some other type of peeling basecoat under your glitter you’ll find that it takes about 6 seconds for the glue to get bubble and then it peels right off. As with all acetone nail polish this leaves a white powdery looking film on your finger/nail. Also to note. There are two holes on top and if you scrub too vigorously acetone will splash out. So don’t get too excited. XD Just wash your hands and you are good to go. I find this easier and less time consuming than using the foil method I was previously using for glitter polish. I’m on my second jar of dip-it. You’ll find after awhile that the remover turns black and begins to stain your nails. I just kept re-filling my jar with acetone. I did that for several months before getting a new jar. I love this thing dude.

Thursday Guest Post: Indie Know’s Five Marvellous Mattes

||||| Like It 1 Like it! |||||

5 Marvellous Mattes CollageHi everyone! We’re the team from Indie Know, and today we’d like to show you our favorite indie matte products. A huge thank you to Luna for giving us this opportunity to share! This is an adaptation of the Colors of the Rainbow blogger tag that we’ve been featuring over at Indie Know.

Detrivore LilithAG’s pick – Detrivore Cosmetics‘ Lilith

When I think of my favorite indie mattes, I immediately think of Detrivore’s matte blushes. To me, the standout shade in this beautiful lineup is softly purple Lilith. I cannot recommend this shade enough for pale folks who want something that’s a little unusual but still safe to wear to the office. It comes in Detrivore’s excellent matte formula, which means it’s blendable, creamy, and has just the right amount of pigmentation. It’s one of many Detrivore blushes I’ve ordered in full size, but it’s definitely my favorite!

naked-3-dupe-analog-limitLisa’s pick – Silk Naturals’ Analog

Mattes are the unsung heroes in my eyeshadow collection. I’d like to say I mostly use shadows with shimmery or pearly finishes because I love them (and I do!) but really it comes down to skill. Shimmery shadows simply are more forgiving when you lack a skilled blending hand. But behind the scenes I fall back on a few trusty mattes for highlights and creases, and one of my heavyweight champions is Silk Naturals’s “Analog,” a dupe for the Urban Decay “Limit” shadow from their Naked 3 palette.

Analog is described as a “dusty rose matte” but with a light hand it turns into an excellent transitional crease color. I have pinkish undertones to my skin, so I do have to be careful and not apply too much or else I look like I’ve lost a few nights of sleep! Between the finely milled formula, the classic rose color, and its buttery-smooth blendability, Analog is a staple that could easily fit in anyone’s collection.

MBA OCDJeannie’s pick – My Beauty Addiction’s O.C.D.

When it comes to bold, bright lipsticks, I feel much more comfortable rocking a pink lip than a red lip (even if it looks super ’80s!) My Beauty Addiction’s O.C.D. HD Lip Paint is described as a “a super bright & vivid pink with a matte finish.” On my skin, it appears lighter and a little more Barbie-pink than in the swatch on the website, where it looks more hot-pink. Texture-wise, it’s not as drying as many matte lipsticks I’ve tried, but I recommend making sure lips are exfoliated and moisturised before applying because this can highlight lip imperfections. Try out a few samples if you’re on the hunt for opaque, pigmented matte lippies!

13451658494_a49ab45f54_kKristin’s pick – Madd Style Cosmetics‘ In the Buff

One of my favorite all time mattes is from Madd Style Cosmetics. In The Buff is a perfect nude shade for me and I use it to blend out harsh edges. I’m so sad that MSC is going out of business! But before they close, they’re having a huge blow out sale. They’re selling 8 eyeshadows for $28! I’d definitely recommend checking out their line before they’re all gone. I’ll be picking up a few extras of this shade for sure.

Detrivore TombValentine’s pick – Detrivore’s Tomb

Back in the olden days, long before the customer service issues that ultimately landed Detrivore in a distribution partnership with Shiro Cosmetics, I ordered the whole Graveyard Collection, which was a set of 20 matte neutral eyeshadows. My favorite of the whole batch was Tomb, which is still available via Shiro. Tomb is boring (it’s from a collection of neutrals, after all) but something about the color just hits a sweet spot for me–it’s a mid-toned cool taupe brown that leans slightly towards lavender-rose in the same way as mainstream eyeshadows Burberry Rosewood or NARS Lhasa do on the other end of the price spectrum. I’ve swatched it here heavily over Urban Decay Primer Potion.

What are some of your favorite indie matte products?

Life. How does it work?

Life post!

||||| Like It 1 Like it! |||||

Dude, it’s been awhile since I really talked about my life on here. This year has been hard so far, last year wasn’t great either. There was radio silence for awhile and I’ll tell you why. Last year my husband left me. He did it in a cruel manner. I haven’t had contact with him since January. With the separation came a bunch of bull honkey and we ended up having to leave the house we lived in for several years. The kiddos and I had no where to go. We were “homeless” for awhile. We stayed at a homeless ranch over an hour away from where we were living for a couple of weeks. Then we had to leave. We ended up staying with some friends of my mom. There were 7 of us in a 2 bedroom trailer. Ouch. But we had a place to live. I ended up going on TANF and we are on SNAP for food. Sorry if this bounces all over the place.

My bloodsugar has been wacky this year, more so than usual from the stress. It goes from too high to way too low. My bloodsugar dropped to 50 today and I’m not dealing with it very well. Ick. Anyways. I’ve also been going through the whole filing for disability thing. I actually just sent in an appeal today. But yes we had a place to stay. It was hard, things were tight, everyone was stressed. We got really, really lucky. My mom was staying with someone in an apartment complex. She ended up explaining to the manager our situation and an apartment came available in May. So the kids and I are sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with my mom right now. Which is also hard. My mom and I don’t have a good relationship. :( The kids were diagnosed with autism last year also. A whole lot happened last year. Ugh.

So we have a place to live right now. All of my TANF goes to rent. Buying pretties is WAY out of the question right now. Which makes me sad. ALL THE PRETTIES! So things are stressful right now, there is major friction between my mom and I. But we have a place to live. Just hoping and praying disability comes through sooner rather than later. Patience is hard yo. Today we got the kids all checked in at their schools. Because of no money and TANF going to rent we went to a program that gives backpacks, school supplies and a clothes closet. So the kiddos have most of their school supplies. I’m not quite sure how we’ll get the rest, but we’ll make due. They need shoes. Ugh. We tried to find shoes for them while we were there, but they had nothing in Sascha’s size and everything in Fumiko’s were in just as bad shape as the shoes she already has. So we left empty handed as far as shoes go. But hey, they got school supplies.

There have been many doctor and therapy appointments for me and they continue to be ongoing. The kiddos have their fair share of therapy appointments as well. :( Fumiko has gone from being completely silent about her fathers absence to saying things like “I want to kill him. My daddy hates my love and I hate his love.”. How in the hell do you respond to that. It’s been hard. And Sascha blames himself despite me telling him a billion times none of this is his fault at all. It’s a delicate situation. Time will heal. We just have to be patient. I want our own place and the kids want it just as bad. I keep telling myself and them to be patient. Things will change. This isn’t permanent. We need a healthy environment. Very bad.

So I’ve been swatching like a mad man, trying to keep myself busy when I can. The insomnia is crazy and often times I don’t sleep. We are trying to find something that works, but I’m limited on what I can take because of the seratonin syndrome. Depression meds are not helping. I have appointments to go in and hopefully try something else. I still go through periods of sick as hell and oh hey I can sort of function today. But things will be okay, yo. The kids are super excited for school. They have some friends in the apartment complex we live in. Fumiko even has a friend right next door. It’s been good for them. So I shall continue swatching and maybe even start writing about our boring lives. XD I have lots of samples to try and review too. So you’ll see lots of little mini reviews.

Well that was rather long. I said more than I planned. Well here are some pictures of Fumiko. She is proud of her faerie dress and the fact that she finally lost a couple of teeth! Also my nearly bare faced face from today. I didn’t sleep. Eyes are bloodshot and hair was pulled back in a pony-tale. I just haphazardly put on brows and used Mannequin from Glamour Doll Eyes and their new Bad Seed gel eyeliner and a little bit of Unicorn from Fyrinnae on the inner and outer corners and finally mascara. That’s it. I used a face mask a few days back and it broke my face out and irritated it. D: So I didn’t want to put anything else on my face. So excuse my poor skin. I would have photos of Sascha but I’m going to have to tie him down to something to get some photos. XD Silly boy. So yes. There. Happy thoughts! I’ve also been lucky to have my best friend through all of this. She was there for me when things were really rough and I am so grateful for her friendship. I’ve also made a few new friendships on this here interwebz that have been really nice.

Review: Valentia Skin Care Even Glow Serum

||||| Like It 0 Like it! |||||

press sample

I was given the opportunity to try the Valentia Skin Care Even Glow Serum through BrandBacker! I was sent a full size bottle of Even Glow Serum about a week ago. I’ve been using it once a day every day since then. Earlier this year I switched my skincare over to primarily asian skincare products. I was however lacking a Vitamin C serum, so getting to try this product was really great!

Thursday Guest Post: Comparison of Indie Lip Balms

||||| Like It 1 Like it! |||||

Hi everyone!  I’m Daisy and I love talking about indies over at  /r/indiemakeupandmore.  Luna kindly agreed to let me do a guest post and I’ll be sharing my experiences with indie lip balms.

To begin with, I should probably tell you something about my lips: They’re really awful.  They crack, peel, bleed, and in general just look awful even if they’re not having a bad day.  And yes, I’ve tried drinking more water.  In elementary school, on multiple occasions, I would have teachers offer me Vaseline on little spoons  because they felt their lips peeling just looking at mine.  And those were on the good days.

I’ve since learned how to manage my finicky lips and along the way come to the conclusion that lip balms are incredibly personal. Different people take to various ingredients (the same lip balms that leave me peeling are some of my sister’s favorites while she can’t stand any of the ones I use).  There’s a lot of textural variation (soft, waxy, etc.) and personal preferences as well.

To get a reference of my personal preferences and how my lips behave here are some mainstream lip balms/ingredients that have worked for me:

  1. 100% Lanolin – holy grail, and so far the only thing I’ve encountered that actually seems to moisturize my lips rather than simply prevent them from chapping too much
  2. Blistex – prevents my lips from getting worse, possibly just a waxy barrier to trap moisture in
  3. Smith’s Rosebud salve – if my lips are already doing okay (from lanolin) then this works to maintain them at that level, otherwise it doesn’t do much for actually chapped lips

Here are some mainstream items that haven’t worked for me:

  1. EOS – these feel nice on for about 5 minutes, start to dry out my lips after that, and by 30 minutes my lips are worse for having them on
  2. Softlips – great to apply, very smooth but needs constant reapplication and dries out my lips similarly to EOS
  3. 100% Vaseline – unfortunately those teachers were just exacerbating the problem as Vaseline tends to make my lips crack as soon as the glossiness wears off
  4. 100% Shea butter – I need to reapply this about every 5 minutes, dries out my lips spectacularly fast

Now armed with a bit of information about my lips, we’re ready to talk indies!  In order of softest to hardest, here’s my list and thoughts:

  1. Detrivore Embalming Tubes: Extremely soft, this is not one you want if you ever store your lip balms in your pocket. I try to apply this by barely touching my lips. It is very buttery, feels rather oily and looks like a gloss upon first application. It sinks in after a while (30 or so minutes if you leave your lips alone, in about a minute if you rub them together) but only really maintains my lips at a decent level instead of improving them.
  2. Notoriously Morbid Coffin Kissers: Soft, but not insanely so like the Detrivore ones. This doesn’t particularly improve my lips but doesn’t make them any worse. If you like a soft lip balm that sinks in quickly, this would be your best option.
  3. Kimberly Noel Cosmetics Lip Lotion: (Full disclosure: I received this as a gift from Kimberly Noel although she didn’t know it would be featured in this guest blog post.) This is very soft and applies just as thickly as the Detrivore embalming tubes, with a gloss-like finish. However, it feels more wax-like and after checking the ingredients list I realized my HG lanolin is the 2nd one listed.  I like this one quite a bit, although I was sent “Mint Peppermint” and I find menthol a questionable inclusion. I also personally don’t like the cooling/burning sensation.
  4. noto

  5. Performance Colors Lip Repair: This is soft and applies smoothly, but is more on the waxy side than oily. It doesn’t apply with a gloss-like finish, seems to be absorbed easily and is one of the more moisturizing lip balms I’ve tried.
  6. Silk Naturals Matte Lip Balm: Slightly waxier than PC lip repair, I really enjoy applying this as it truly just glides on, even over my chapped lips. It’s not quite as moisturizing as I would like (keeping in mind my ridiculously dry lips) but it’s fantastic for when my lips are already in good condition. It also does not apply matte as advertised. It doesn’t have the same glossy or wet finish, but there is certainly a (natural-looking) sheen to it.
  7. Haus of Gloi Lip Balm: These do glide on but you do have to apply a bit more pressure to get it on your lips than with the SN lip balm. Personally, sometimes I do find this one a bit easier to use since with the other options you have to be careful not to apply too much.  It’s the most moisturizing indie option I’ve tried save for the PC lip repair.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the indie balms out there and there are certainly some that I’d like to try eventually. If you have any that you adore, please feel free to share in the comments.

Otherwise, I hope this provided some ideas for your next lip balms!
