Thursday Guest Post!

A Lotus Look for Toxid Lotus

Hello, friends! Sophia here, also known as /u/iskindoffunny on reddit, or @fbstonefacekilla on Instagram. Luna recently reached out to me and asked me to do a guest post. While pondering what to do I figured I should do a lotus-inspired look given Luna’s blog name. Low hanging fruit? Maybe… But it did inspire me! Here’s the look!

Lotus Straight On

My general idea for this look was to create a blushed, blooming effect with a lotus’ color palette. Once I had the idea for the forehead lotus, it lead the vision for the rest of the look.

I outlined the lotus freehand with NYX’s White Liquid Liner and heavily shaded  around it with My Pretty Zombie‘s Drugs Like Me Blush in MDMA.  The center is filled with a dusting of My Pretty Zombie‘s Miasma over white, the medium inner petals are just MDMA, the small petals are Fyrinnae‘s Crimson Ghost, and the large petals are Fyrinnae‘s Rapunzel Had Extensions.
Lotus Profile I

I used Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless in 110 Porcelain for my base and carried MDMA down onto my cheeks, in the crease, as my nose shading, and on the chin. I wanted to be as radiant as possible so I heavily applied Hello Waffle‘s highlighter in Midna to my cheeks, chin, cupids bow, and nose and layered Femme Fatale’s limited edition highlighter in Diaphanous over it .
Lotus Profile II

In the inner corner I have Shiro’s Cake!, on the lid, Cake! blended into Femme Fatale’s Divinity, and  MDMA in the crease and blown out to the sides. On my bottom lash line is MPZ’s Miasma with a bit of Hello Waffle‘s Ocelot to add more depth. I did my brows very lightly with NYX’s Micro Brow Pencil and a sharp wing with NYX’s Studio Liquid Liner in Extreme Black.

A close up of the gradient lip.

Lip Close Up

I used Life’s Entropy’s Lip Theory in Derivative around the perimeter of the lips, layered and blended another Lip Theory in Quantum over it, with NYX’s Macaron Lippie in Citron in the center.

That’s the break down of this look! I hope you like it and if you’d like to see more, check out my Instagram or keep your eye out on r/IndieMakeupandMore for an occasional post! And thank you again to Luna for reaching out and letting me share my makeup enthusiasm with all of you.

While this works to effectively reduce the appearance of aging and to treat acne, it will never leave the skin feeling or looking dry thanks to the first few ingredients in the above list. Ingredients such as the various oils, Jojoba, and Evening Primrose leave the skin feeling soft to the touch.

Aloe Vera is a completely natural and healing skin agent that both heals and soothes. Chamomile is a completely natural and effective anti-inflammatory agent perfect for inflamed acne breakouts. Vitamins A and C refresh the skin and improve overall skin health.

• Clear & Radiant Skin Experience the confidence that comes with clear and smooth skin. When you add this Dead Sea mud mask to your regular skin care regimen you will see dramatic results after almost the first use. Works great as a spot treatment for blackheads or blemishes as well.

Where to buy
From Amazon – You get a 5.1 fluid ounce tube for $9.95 USD.
From Adovia – You get a 5.1 fluid ounce tube for $14.49 USD.

Before you get started with your new all-natural mud mask, here’s what you’ll want to do first:

Wash and Exfoliate: Gently wash and exfoliate the skin before applying the mask. It is recommended to wash your face with the Adovia Mud Soap before using the Adovia Mud Mask. Additionally, it is recommended to use the Adovia Exfoliating Facial Salts for Acne before for maximum natural skin exfoliation.

Steam the Skin: Consider maximizing the benefits of the mask by using the mask following a nice steamy shower. If you have a steam room, sit in the steam room for 15-20 minutes, or steam the bathroom without getting in the shower by turning on the shower with hot water, shutting the door and sitting in the room for 15-20 minutes. This measure helps to open up the pores before you get started.

Another way to steam the skin is to boil a pot of water or boil water in a bowl in the microwave. If you boil the water on the stove, pour the water into a bowl after it has reached a boiling point. Once the water is boiled and steamy, stand over the bowl of hot water and hold a towel over your head to keep the steam trapped. Avoid burning yourself by keeping a safe distance from the boiling hot water.

Fun Tip: Consider creating a spa like environment while steaming the skin by pampering yourself and adding a few drops of your favorite natural essential oil into the water. This creates an aromatherapy affect. If you don’t have any essential oils on hand, consider using pieces of orange, lemon, or even a couple drops of vanilla extract.

Directions for Adovia Dead Sea Mud Mask Usage

  1. 1.   Gently clean and exfoliate your face. Then, pat dry with a soft towel.
  2. 2.   Apply mud mask liberally to face, ensuring adequate coverage on the face and neck. Make sure to apply a thick layer over problematic areas such as the T-zone. Remember, your T-zone is your forehead, cheeks and chin. These areas of the face are more prone to oily skin. It is recommended to leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes.
  3. 3.   Rinse mask with warm water and a gentle soft washcloth. Be sure to be careful when removing the mask to avoid skin irritation. Once the mask has been removed, gently splash the face with cool water. This measure helps to close the pores.
  4. 4.   Follow-up treatment with a gentle and lightweight facial moisturizer to leave skin extra soft, preferably the Adovia Day Moisturizing Cream.

Use mask once a week for optimum results or as needed to give your skin a healthy boost any time.

This comes in a cardboard box with product and company information on it. The mask comes in a white squeeze tube with a white screw on cap. It has product and company information on the tube.

Scent and formula
It’s a thick, creamy dark grayish green mask. It smells like slightly muddy aloe and maybe a little wax.

Demineralised Water & Dead Sea Water, Dead Sea Mud, Stearic Acid, Cetryl Alcohol, Beeswax, Sorbitan Tristearate, Propylene Glycol & Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) Extract & Algae Extract & Papaya (Carica Papaya) Extract & Aloe Vera (Barbadensis) Gel, Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus) Seed Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Mandarin Orange (Citrus Nobilis) Oil, Jojoba (Buxus Chinensis) Oil, Olive (Olea Europaea) Oil, Triethanolamine, Evening Primrose (Oenothera Biennis) Oil, Peach (Prunus Persica) Kernel Oil, Benzoic Acid, Chlorphenesin, Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzalkonium Chloride, Dead Sea Salt, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Exotic Verbena (Litsea Citrata) Oil, Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) Extract, Soybean (Glycine Soja) Extract, Ascorbic Acid.

I received this mask through Brandbacker to try. I like the smell of this mask, it’s a light aloe scent that is slightly muddy/waxy. It’s super thick and takes a long time to dry on my face. It’s very cooling and soothing while it’s on my face, I really like that right now because it’s been SUPER hot and hasn’t been raining. This has a whole lot of skin loving ingredients in it. It’s made to be useful as a spot treatment for acne and it’s supposed to reduce the appearance of blackheads. I haven’t had any acne break outs since I started using this regularly. I’m not sure if it’s because of the mask, or because my skin has decided to play nice for a little while. Either way, it’s a good thing. This is also supposed to help reduce oiliness, increase skin elasticity and give skin a nice healthy glow. While this reduces oiliness(and it so does) it actually leaves my skin feeling super soft and slightly moisturized. It doesn’t dry my skin out at all. While my forehead nose and sometimes chin are oily, my cheeks are on the dry side. This combats my oily forehead and nose without leaving my cheeks parched. This definitely reduced the appearance of pores. After using it they aren’t that noticeable, especially when I use it a few times a week. This rinses totally clean as well. I’ve used a fair amount of masks, several of them mud masks and this is one of my favorite ones. The company suggests cleansing and exfoliating and even steaming your face to prepare for using the mask. I however just wash my face well and rinse it before using and it works great. I’m sure eventually I’ll get around to doing the extra steps, but for right now, just cleansing works.

The company offers a money back guarantee as well. If after a month of use this hasn’t improved your skin you can receive a full refund.

Thursday Guest Post!

Swimming In Once Upon a Time Inspired Indie Shadows

Hey, all! Destiny from Bellibone Beauty here for Guest Post Thursday! I’m so excited to be posting on Toxid Lotus, and Luna is a doll for having me.

If you know me, I’m fairly obsessed with Once Upon a Time. My tumblr feed consists of swarms of CaptainSwan gifsets and fanfics, and I have no shame. So, naturally, when indie companies release Once Upon a Time inspired products, I vacuum them up unabashedly. I’ve been rewatching the show to fill the sad void between seasons, and today I decided to share my little hoard with you! I’m swatching Darling Girl‘s Fairy Tale Romance Collection and the shadows from Notoriously Morbid‘s May Vanishing Cabinet. Darling Girl has released a companion collection to Fairy Tale Romance, named Wicked is Coming, but I haven’t received my order yet. I wait impatiently..

Let’s dig in, shall we? All products purchased by me, and all opinions are my own. Swatches are taken over bare skin and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion on the top row, and Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy on the bottom. Italicized information is taken directly from the corresponding brand website.

02 If I Only Had a Heart

If I Only Had a Heart (Darling Girl): pale cream with gold sheen and gold iridescence

Inspired by the short-lived Sheriff Graham, this is a pale highlighter shade with a subtle golden iridescence. I use this as an inner corner highlight as well as a facial highlight.

03 Dearie

Dearie (Notoriously Morbid): description unavailable

Who hasn’t ever looked at Rumple’s crocodile skin and wanted an eyeshadow with that gorgeous golden glow? This is a muddied olive-brown with an antique gold shine.

04 Misthaven

Misthaven (Notoriously Morbid): description unavailable

Though it’s commonly referred to as the Enchanted Forest, the actual name of the realm is Misthaven. You only hear it called that once or twice, don’t ask me why. This is a muted forest green with a murky cornflower shift to it.

05 Hot as Baelfire

Hot as Baelfire (Darling Girl): mid tone matte plummy brown

While some may have been smitten by Charming or Graham, I was head over heels for Baelfire. Charming and sincere, and oh lordy that smile. This is a matte plummy brown, and I have no idea why I thought it would be a good idea to swatch it over Pixie Epoxy. It was a nightmare. (Mattes and glitter adhesive do not mix for obvious reasons.)

06 Always the Queen

Always the Queen (Notoriously Morbid): description unavailable

Oh, Regina. I am so often conflicted by you. At the very least, I love to hate you, and I might never trust you. This is a cranberry-toned red with a strong metallic copper shift. If you don’t apply this shadow over a glitter adhesive, you’re missing out! (Why my Pixie Epoxy swatch picture turned out so warm is beyond me..)

07 You Want Darkness

You Want Darkness? (Notoriously Morbid): description unavailable

Being so heavily influenced by fairy tales, Once Upon a Time deals with a lot of common themes, including the constant battle between your inner darkness and light. After the Season 4 finale, I am ready to embrace the dark side. This is a smokey purple with silver shimmer, and it reminds me of the purple smoke that is associated with dark magic in the show.

08 Let's Hook Up

Let’s Hook Up (Darling Girl): blackened green base with holographic gold sparkle and green and orange sparkle

Mm mm mm. Once Killian Jones stepped into the ring, I forgot all about Baelfire. Sultry, passionate, and surprisingly classy for a pirate. His eyebrow raises induce embarrassing amounts of squealing. This is such a perfect shadow for Hook! It’s a deep black base with gold and green sparkle. This is a crazy glittery shadow, so anyone without a glitter adhesive has now been forewarned. It gets everywhere.

That wraps up my guest post today! Thank you so much for reading, and thanks again to Luna for having me!

Review: The Gatekeeper’s Trilogy by Eva Pohler

press sample

Official description
A young adult fantasy about the ancient gods in modern times.

A teen becomes entangled with the gods of Mount Olympus when one of them, Thanatos, the god of death, wants his chance at love. He makes a deal with his father, Hades, to go to the upperworld to win Therese’s heart, but not all the gods are happy.

Part paranormal romance and part adventure story, this trilogy follows Therese’s adventures as she struggles to overcome the challenges the gods dish her in her quest to become like them.

Follow Therese’s adventures as she strives to become a goddess in the ancient Greek pantheon.

Where to buy
From Amazon – For $5.98 USD.
From Barnes&Noble – For $5.98 USD.
From Google Play – For $6.14 USD.

This trilogy includes The Gatekeeper’s Sons, The Gatekeeper’s Challenge and The Gatekeeper’s Daughter. The book series is geared towards teens, but I enjoyed it. My son is a HUGE fan of Greek Mythology and because of that I’ve spent my fair share of time learning about it. These books were refreshing to read(because they weren’t sexual. I’ve been reading the Anita Blake series >.> ) and a little bit morbid, which I like. I don’t think my son would enjoy these as he’s at a point where he doesn’t really enjoy anything having to do with a love story and these are about a Greek God who falls in love with a girl, who in turn falls in love with him, despite all the crazy stuff they have to go through. I do think however my daughter will love these when she’s a little older. (I’m still going to try to get my son to read them, I still think he’d enjoy them despite the looooove) Overall these are good books and would be great for the teen who doesn’t just want to read about a love story, but wants to read about fighting and pain too.
