Waxing and earrings and things, oh my!

What? They totally go together! :shifty: I sold a second pair of earrings today while I was at the therapist! Thanks Krista! ^.^ I can’t wait for the supplies I ordered last night to come in. Making jewelry is addicting. :( I’m already wanting to make necklaces/bracelets. Oh noes! I need to invest in some organizers to put my beads in. Leaving them in the baggies doesn’t work out so well.

Onto waxing! So I tried some time ago to make my own sugaring mix and tried waxing my legs myself. It kind of failed miserably. In certain areas on my leg it would remove hair just fine, in others… not so much. In the places it did yank out hair I developed bumps and a rash and horrible ingrown hairs. It’s safe to say I’ll never try to wax my legs again. Also word of advice, don’t google waxing bumps or such, you’ll regret it. I promise.

I do however wax my underarms. I have a little wax pan that I originally purchased for waxing my face(which is horribly painful. T.T ), and then started using it on my underarms. It’s surprisingly painless most of the time. Though about every other time, it’s horribly painful. :( I keep hoping my body with give up and be like “Dude she’s gonna keep waxing, just give up!”. But yeah. If you’re afraid of waxing your underarms, I’d try it out a couple of times. It’s so nice to not have to shave your underarms every single day.

P.S. Halfway through the first hunger games book. I like it so far. I’m excited to get through the first book and read the other two.

My Top Ten Indie List

In no particular order(and by no particular order I apparently meant alphabetical order…) I’m going to list my top ten favorite indie companies and then I’m gonna tag a few people to do the same. ;)

  1. Cocoa Pink – oh man. I fell in love with her scent fear of cemeteries. It’s amazing. She was going to drop her hallow’s eve scents and I bugged her on a few occasions to keep it. Luckily someone suggested changing the name to Dirty Carnation which she liked so yay it stays. I’m in love with her voluptuous body butter and her bubbling scrub is pretty awesome too. Her shampoo is awesome and it makes a great kitty wash. ;)
  2. Darling girl Cosmetics – Susan has a million and one shades of shadow to choose from. She has some beautiful shadow colors, but I especially like her colored lip balms and her lip scrub in a tube. If you haven’t purchased anything with the rose/passionfruit scent you’re missing out. She also has cream blushes which are awesome, especially Pink no Corisu. ;)
  3. Detrivore Cosmetics – Oh man Distorria has some gorgeous shadows. She also lives within driving distance of me so I get to pick up my packages in person. Woot! I love the theme to her shadows, I love their creepy names and they’re just beautiful. A little birdie also told me that she’ll be selling perfume oils soon too. ;) If you don’t own Omen you need to remedy that. GORGEOUS purple!
  4. Evil Shades Cosmetics – oh man. She has beautiful lippies and shadows and everything. She made a shadow after me called Toxic Lotus, it’s gorgeous, you should get it along with Eplefe and um all of her other shadows. If you like pink lipstick you have to get Fearless, it’s freaking amazing, and Deception? Perfect freaking nude. I want all of her lippies and shadows and blushes, and okay pretty much everything she sells. Her spectrum pots and primer have been the longest lasting eye primers as well. Check them out. ;) Also drooling over her holiday shades!
  5. innocent+twisted alchemy – Gosh these colors are beautiful. They remind me of the old Aromaleigh formulas. They’re just shiny and complex and pretty. She offers sample pods/clamshells and she fills them to the brim, she’s also a sweetheart and does all the art for her company. She’s very talented. Twisted is one of the most amazing colors ever, and I love Innocent as well, I love all of her shades and can’t wait to get my claws on her holiday set.
  6. Linnaeus Cosmetics – Okay so Marin is possibly the sweetest, cutest, quirkiest creeper in the universe. I loves her. Her shadows are rich and beautiful and the formulas are like butter. They’re just wonderful. Plus she was super awesome and made the Axolotl collection for me! *squee* There are no duochromes but her shadows have beautiful sparks of color and look complex. She’s definitely a keeper. Can’t wait for her shop to open back up at the beginning of the year.
  7. Morgana Cryptoria – Oh jeez what can I say, I need one of everything please. She has gorgeous, amazing lippies. I have a few of her balms that are rich and amazing, I’m sad to see them go, but the new glosses and gels look pretty awesome, and she did turn some of the balm colors into glosses. Hooray for diabolical druscilla! I have Azalea and Azalea blue in cute little flower pots that Amanda from Karmic Dreaming sold me during a blog sale. Love them. I currently have an order from her and am trying to patiently wait until Wednesday so I can pay for it. Can’t wait to have more of her lippies!
  8. My Pretty Zombie – Seriously Andrea is a goth Mary Poppins. I kid you not. She’s tied with Marin for cutest, sweetest, quirkiest, most awesomely nice person ever. She’s genuinely nice and aims to please and has the best customer service. Besides her being awesome, she makes amazing shadows, if you want duochromes check her out, because she has some sort of magic touch for duo’s. Kid you not. mNg trio, Husbandry Afflictions collection, monstrous industry, illustrated ink, there are so many pretties it’s hard to choose. PLUS she makes zombie barbies. When I first shopped with her the barbies gave me the creeps, it was mostly the blood painted on, I don’t do well with blood, but now I kinda like them, and kinda want one. She did trade me a zombified barbie hand pendant for a scarf(I’m still making the scarf. >.> ). So check her out cause if you like creepy you’ll like MPZ. Also don’t pass up Unicorn Pee or her MDMA blush of freaking awesome sauce.
  9. One Hand Washes the Other – Becca is a crazy, blunt, firey witch troll that stands over her giant cauldron making black magic soap of amaze. Seriously that stuff is magic. She was also awesome enough to make a glycerin free formula for me, which is even more awesome, AND, AND SHE MADE MY MOST PERFECT SMELL. I Smell Like a Witch is omg perfect. The only thing better is mixing I Smell Like a Witch with Cocoa Pink’s Fear of Cemeteries. It’s like magic and the most amazing smell EVER. I’m counting the minutes until we get paid so I can order creamy soap and everything possible in I Smell Like a Witch. Seriously, right now, I smell like a witch yo and I like it. Also Becca has black magic soap in jars, and soon she shall have scrubby black magic soap in a jar which I can’t wait to try!
  10. Persephone Minerals – Vic is like the queen of duochrome shadows. She’s got some pretties and holy crap if you haven’t seen her Sailor Senshi collections you must go now and see them, they’re amazing and I need them all. NEED, seriously NEED them. They bring back so many awesome memories of watching Sailor Moon, and YES I do love Sailor Moon, so pffft. Vic has amazing colors and her holiday collections are no disappointment. I’ve been swatching them the past few days and they’re beautiful. All I have left to swatch is the reindeer collection and they’ll all be up for your viewing pleasure.

There are other companies that I love as well like Black Rose Minerals, Venomous Cosmetics, Pollen Cosmetics, and yes even Madd Style Cosmetix(please don’t burn me at the stake). They all have beautiful, amazing, quality shadows and you should check them out. I think next time I’ll do a top 15 or 20 list. XD Some of these companies have been around for awhile, others are brand new, but gosh they’re worth checking out and trying. There are some new companies sprouting up that I’d like to try so maybe next time I decide to make a list I’ll have some new companies up, and well a long list. XD

And now I tag Luna, Amanda, Claire, Mandy, Stephanie, Andrea, Sammi, Angela and Taryn.

Let’s see your favorite top ten! ;)

Honey in the Raw: All About Raw Honey

By Zhenya K. Wine

Bees get a bad rap. All their hard work produces raw, unprocessed honey, which contains pollen with 22 amino acids, 27 minerals and a spectrum of vitamins, along with honeycomb, antioxidants and 5,000 live enzymes. Have you taken advantage of what bees can offer?

It may seem strange to some that scientists recently discovered a mummy buried with, of all things, a pot of honey. Even more surprising, the honey was still good to eat after thousands of years! To me, this makes complete sense – after all, it’s honey we’re talking about.

What makes honey so special? As an example, by combining half a cup of raw honey with half a cup of aloe juice or pulp and the juice of one large lemon, you can create an effective syrup for colds and cough that even finicky children will not refuse. All of these components are antibacterial and the syrup is soothing to the throat, which reduces cough. The star of this syrup concoction, of course is the raw honey, which has not been pasteurized or filtered and ideally is taken directly from the hive.

Not all honey is the same – you know this by simply looking at the honey and smelling it. Honey that is full of pollen will be heavier than the same amount of honey without the pollen, and its smell will be rich and heavy. The honey quality depends on the amount of pollen found in the nectar the bees gather. Local honey contains all of the local pollens (some of which are irritants or allergens to us). By ingesting the pollen in honey you will, in fact, build immunity to the pollinator, and this is an easy way to prevent pollen allergies. The action is not dissimilar to the flu vaccine – by ingesting small amounts of the irritant, you build a tolerance to it. Ideally, you should look for the honey that contains both spring and late summer pollens in it. The best news about the presence of pollen in the honey is its change in taste – it has almost a “body” to it(like wine).

There are many subtle variations in honey made all over the world. Orange blossom honey from Florida or California is excellent for flavoring white tea due to its aromatic and exquisite orange blossom taste. Linden honey has an incredible aroma and medicinal function from the properties of the linden flower. Linden blossoms, which bloom in May, contain flavanoids that soothe and reduce inflammation. These properties are then passed into the honey. Linden hone is “blond” in color and has a very exotic, flowery aroma. When my local beekeeper does not have much linden honey, I buy it in specialty stores(it comes from Europe and is marked as such). If the honey you buy crystallizes, don’t be alarmed; crystallization only occurs around a pollen pod. If your honey crystallizes rabidly and in large quantity, this is a good sign it is loaded with pollen.

Raw honey has so much more to offer than the honey you buy in most supermarkets. The honey is created by bees foraging and eating plant food as compared to the simple sugar syrup that so man commercial and larger beekeepers feed their bees in order to meet the production demand. The reason honey is such a great healer is because it is composed mostly of fructose, though glucose and other sugars such as sucrose and maltose are also present. Raw honey that has more fructose(more pollen means more fructose) can be used in very small doses by diabetics since the fructose has a slower rate of transformation into glucose.

The list of raw honey’s health benefits is impressive. It is full of catalase enzymes which help the body fight free radicals. These and other enzymes found in honey get destroyed if the honey is heated to more than 104 F to promote faster extraction from the comb. Raw honey is also rich in many flavanoids such as pinocembrin, pinobanksin, chrysin, galagin, acecetin, quercetin and kaempherol, which help the body attack allergens, viruses, and carcinogens. In addition to these benefits, honey is packed with vitamins and minerals including riboflavin(B12), niacin(B3), pantothenic acid(B5), vitamin B6, folate(B9), vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

The way in which raw honey is extracted and strained can tell a great deal about its quality. A “coarse strain” of honey retains the Propolis – a gluey substance the bees collect from the buds. It has a dark brown or reddish color and looks like small granules in the raw honey. Although there are a lot of misgivings by modern medicine towards Propolis, it has been used in traditional and folk medicine around the world for the past 5,000 years. Propolis is a substance the bees use not only as a sealant for the small cracks in the hive but also to build immunity in their young(like colostrums for mammals). Many humans respond with an allergic reaction when ingesting pure extracted Propolis, but when the Propolis is mixed in the honey, the body generally, is able to absorb it without any problems. Propolis is used for treatment of inflammation, viral diseases, ulcers, superficial burns, canker sores and gingivitis, and can be used as an antiseptic dressing on open wounds. It also is believed to have an antibiotic, antifungal, and even immuno-modulatory function. Please note that honey can be dangerous if ingested by children under 1 year of age due to the presence of botulinum toxin, from which infants can contract botulism(whereas older children and adults can destroy these toxins). The same toxin is the base of the well-known Botox, so it is no surprise that many cultures have used raw honey as a skin rub for thousands of years.

The next time you swat at a bee, take a second to remember the gift of raw honey. Its sweet taste is just the start of its appeal, as long as it comes straight from the source – the hive. When your cold and allergy symptoms act up this season, try a spoonful of honey to keep you going.

Here are more ways to harness the healing power of raw honey:

Burns:
Apply freely over burns. It cools, removes pain, serves as an antibiotic and aids in quick healing without scarring.

Cough Mixture:
Combine 6 ounces of honey, 2 ounces of glycerin and the juice of two lemons. Bottle and cork firmly, and use as required.

Hyperactivity:
Replace white sugar with honey. Honey provides the energy without the “spike” in blood sugar.

Insomnia:
A small spoonful of honey in warm milk helps you fall asleep.

Migraines:
Dissolve a spoonful of honey in half a glass of warm water. Sip at the first signs of a migraine, and if necessary, repeat after another 20 minutes.

Nasal Congestion:
Place a spoonful of honey in a basin of water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin.

Fatigue:
Dissolve a spoonful of honey in warm water as a natural stabilizer. Honey is primarily fructose and glucose, so it is quickly absorbed by the digestive system.

Facial Cleanser:
Mix honey with an equal quantity of oatmeal and apply to the face for 30 minutes. The concoction works as a deep cleanser for acne and other unwanted blemishes.

Poor Digestion:
Mix honey with an equal quantity of apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste with water. This also eases joint pain and promotes weight loss.

Osteoporosis:
Research has shown that a teaspoon of honey per day aids calcium utilization and prevents osteoporosis.

Sore Throats:
Let a teaspoon of honey melt in the back of your mouth and trickle down the throat. This reduces tissue inflammation. I can’t tell you how amazing this really is for sore throats. We haven’t had to purchase cough drops in I don’t even know how long now. It’s really amazing for the pain relief and quick healing.

Cold & Cough Syrup:
Combine half a cup of raw honey with half a cup of aloe juice or pulp, 3 tablespoons liquid chlorophyll, and the juice of one large lemon. Use as needed. All of these components are antibacterial and the syrup is soothing to the throat, which reduces coughing.

We buy our raw honey locally from this neat little set up at a house. There is literally a little cabinet outside by the garage and you leave your money in the mail slot by the garage then take your honey. :D It’s adorable and sweet and so awesome that they run their business on trust. We generally buy the big jars which are quart jars I believe for $10. Raw honey is an amazing nutrient-rich food and we’ve used it for a long time. It completely got rid of Sascha’s allergies and helped calm him down. It’s my primary sweetener for tea and the first thing I reach for when someone gets sick. Try it, you’ll like it! ;)

Anyways for those who are local and want to try some raw honey, they are located at 6524 SE Queen Rd. in Milwaukie, OR. For those of you who want to try raw honey but don’t know where to buy locally there is a website called BEE-RAW which sells raw honey. :)

Sigma Beauty Cleansing & Polishing Tool

So who hasn’t heard of Clarisonic’s skin cleansing system? No one? Awesome! Good news, friend! Sigma Beauty just released their Cleansing & Polishing Tool[1. affiliate links]. If you’ve been lusting after Clarisonic Mia here’s your chance to get an awesome tool that does the same thing for a much better price.

So let’s say you’ve been living at the bottom of the ocean and you have no idea what these mind boggling tools do, well let me tell you! This little skin gadget does two main things, #1 it cleanses your skin and #2 it exfoliates/polishes your skin. How does this magic happen you ask? Well the Cleansing & Polishing Tool comes with 3 brush heads: soft, medium and firm, and a cute little case to store the brushes and tool in. Soft is used for daily cleansing with your favorite cleanse, please make sure you keep your cleanse under one minute, you probably want to keep your skin intact. ;) You can use the medium or firm brush for weekly exfoliating. Simply add your favorite cleanser to the medium/firm brush and exfoliate away dead skin cells, again make sure you keep your cleanse under one minute. Once you’ve cleansed or exfoliated your face you can apply your moisturizer and go on with your routine. :) The Cleansing & Polish Tool requires 2 AA batteries which are not included. If you don’t already use rechargeable batteries it would be an excellent idea. :D

You can get the Cleansing & Polishing tool for $39 from Sigma Beauty. The Cleansing & Polishing Tool is a fraction of the cost you would be paying for a Clarisonic cleansing system. I have this on my list of goodies I want to get. I’ve been drooling over the Clarisonic Mia for awhile now but it’s simply out of my price range. The Cleansing & Polishing Tool is much more do-able for me and I plan to do it! :D
